Materials Needed for Landscaping Streams

Many people have come to the realization that wetlands and streams are an integral part of the ecosystem and need to be cleaned up and brought back to what nature intended. Where there were once pollutants floating downstream and no sign of life, now people can fish or see the streams and enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer.

In some cases the streams have been all but destroyed. In order to fix streams in this condition, you need planning, team work and a few supplies. The task of landscaping streams is labor intensive and time consuming. There are some basic supplies that need to be purchased. Before rushing of to the store, find where the stream is not destroyed and take note of what plants are there. Then, look to see if there are any rocks also.

One great idea is to sketch the layout of the stream and use the layout to remake the stream in that area. Once you have everything that you need to begin, go to the store and buy the materials. Some of the materials such as river rocks can be easy to find. However, landscaping streams may need many different materials and some might be harder to find.

More Materials for Landscaping Streams

Another material that is often used for landscaping streams is native plants that would normally be found in and around the stream banks. This aids in stopping erosion

and keeping the banking together. However, they may be harder to find than other things on the list. Go to a nursery that specializes in native plants; they will be happy to help and they can name certain plants that grow in that particular area. Not only are native plants beautiful, they grow the best and with very little help, they will soon flourish.

Another material that is needed for landscaping streams is mulch and top soil. Normally these wouldn¡¯t be needed, but in the case of a stream nearly being destroyed, people will need to replace parts of the bank. One material for landscaping streams that might be needed is ground screening. This helps hold all of the new plants and grasses together until the plants can keep erosion at bay. This is important because if there is a storm shortly after everything has been planted, the water will pull the soil and plants and send them downstream. All of the hard work will be lost without a surface screen ¨C which could be the cheapest part of restoration and yet the most necessary.
